Big Halloween Party !!!

Et de 2! Deuxième grosse soirée Halloween de l'année organisée par le même groupe depuis quelques années: villa avec décorations dignes d'un film d'horreur, DJs, groupes de rock et invités tous déguisés le tout dans une ambiance électrique ! J'adore !
Cette année, Jean etait en guerrier Spartan, Marthe en Sorcière Gothique, Mourad en Bob Marley et moi en Super Girl !
Nous y avons aussi rencontré nos amis Betty Boop, Cléopatre, Rahan, le pompier strip-teaseur de service, Michael Phelps et ses huit medailles d'or, les Trois Mousquetaires, Marilyn Monroe, le Joker de Batman, Eve sans Adam et autres sorcières, pirates, j'en passe et des meilleurs... sans oublier mon alter ego masculin: Superman !...
Quelle superbe soirée, vivement Halloween 2010 !!!

Pre-Halloween Party @Beechwood Headquarters

This year, our friends from Beechwood Headquarters had the nice idea to throw a pre-Halloween Party, and we were there !

Halloween parties are always a big hit and fun to attend. People are so creative and it is always exciting to see which costume idea people come up with. To spice up the party, they also organized prizes for the best couple costume, the sexiest costume and the most original costume. And I won the prize for the sexiest costume, yeah!

Oracle Open World '08 and the Treasure Island party

Oracle Open World est toujours l'une des conférences les plus importantes au Moscone Center à San Francisco. Cette année, je reussi à m'extraire une journée de mon project pour assister à des conferences, voir des démos sur la Release 12, faire du 'networking', mais aussi profiter de l'énorme Fête Foraine Party à Treasure Island avec notamment Seal et UB40. Oui, ça valait vraiment le coup d'y aller !

Week-end à Reno / Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Pour s'évader de la Vallée et fêter mon anniversaire, nous décidons de passer le week-end à Reno, surnommée "The biggest little city in the world", soit litteralement "La plus grande petite ville au monde..." Située à 250 miles de San José, soit environ 400 kilomètres et 4 heures de route sans traffic ;o), Reno nous replonge dans l'univers des casinos et du 'gambling' car c'est la premiere ville après la frontière entre la Californie et le Nevada. Nous tombons pile sur le week-end des Hot Summer Nights qui célèbre la musique et surtout les voitures des années 50 et 60. Nous assistons donc à un énorme rassemblement de vieilles voitures sur le 'strip' de Reno, avec de la musique rétro, entourés d'hotels rétro... On se croirait dans une autre époque, bien loin de notre vie quotidienne devant un ordinateur... Reno fait un peu penser au Las Vegas historique avec ses hôtels-casinos un peu démodés.
De plus, la ville est traversée par la "Truckee River", ou, pour échapper à la chaleur caniculaire, toute la ville se rassemble pour descendre la rivière en bouée: la mère, le grand-père, le bébé, la boué pour le chien, sans oublier la bouée cooler pour les bières !...
Sur la route du retour, nous en profitons pour nous premener autour du lac Tahoe que nous avions eu l'occasion de voir l'hiver dernier sous la neige.
Voila un week-end bien sympatique pour se changer les idées.

Leap day

Année bissextile oblige, aujourd'hui est un jour spécial puisque nous sommes le 29 février, et cela ne se produit que tous les quatre ans. Le prochain 29 février sera en 2012 ! Que serons-nous dans quatre ans, ou allons nous ?... Je préfère ne pas le savoir.
Pour la petite info, j'ai appris que les anglophones appellent ce jour spécial un "Leap Day".

Pour marquer le coup et puisque nous sommes vendredi, un petit jacuzzi chez Clément s'impose... ;o)
Après une bonne heure de relaxation dans l'eau chaude bouillonnante, nous nous sommes visionnés le film culte "La Classe américaine" aussi connu sous le nom "Le Grand Détournement".

C'est un téléfilm de 1993, écrit et réalisé par Michel Hazanavicius et Dominique Mézerette. Il est exclusivement composé d'extraits de vieux films de la Warner, montés et doublés afin de créer un nouveau film inédit. Le titre du film provient de l'expression populaire classe américaine.
La première diffusion a eu lieu sur la chaine Canal+ le 31 décembre 1993. Une seconde diffusion a eu lieu en 2004 sur la chaîne Festival (devenue depuis France 4). Le film n'a jamais été édité officiellement en VHS ou en DVD. Il connaît néanmoins une nouvelle jeunesse grâce à des versions numérisées qui circulent sur Internet.

Ce film est considéré comme un film culte dans l'histoire du détournement.
Il débute avec l'affichage de la phrase : « Attention ! ce flim n'est pas un flim sur le cyclimse. Merci de votre compréhension ». Le synopsis ainsi que le déroulement du film en multiples flashbacks parodient Citizen Kane d'Orson Welles.

Synopsis:
L'histoire débute avec la mort de l'homme le plus classe du monde, George Abitbol (John Wayne) au large de l'atoll de Pom Pom Galli, situé entre l'Australia et la South America, dans l'Ocean South Pacifique. Les journalistes Dave (Paul Newman), Peter (Dustin Hoffman) et Steven (Robert Redford) enquêtent sur ses dernières paroles : « Monde de merde ». Les journalistes vont donc approcher toutes les personnes qui l'ont connu pendant sa vie au Texas, et découvrir qu'il n'était peut-être pas aussi classe que la légende le prétendait...

By the Chinese Calendar, 2008 is the Year of the Rat and it starts just today for the new moon!

Chinese calendar has been in continuous use for centuries, which predates the International Calendar (based on the Gregorian Calendar) we use at the present day which goes back only some 425 years. The calendar measures time, from short durations of minutes and hours, to intervals of time measured in months, years and centuries, entirely based on the astronomical observations of the movement of the Sun, Moon and stars.
Also, current year is Year 4705 by the Chinese calendar.
Each year is also designated by one of the 12 Animals. For instance, 2005 is Year of Rooster; 2006 is Year of Dog; and 2007 is the Year of Pig. 2008 is the Year of the Rat

This system is extremely practical. A child does not have to learn a new answer to the question, "How old are you?" in each new year. Old people often lose track of their age, because they are rarely asked about their present age. Every one just have to remember that he or she was born in the "Year of the Dog" or whatever.
Since 2008 is the Year of the Rat, any one who was born in the Year of the Rat is now either 1 or 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73, 85 or 97 years old.

To celebrate, we went to the restaurant Banana Leaf.
The food was flavorful. It was a very good deal Quantity-Quality-Price. Service was efficient too.
Plus, I am pretty sure you get a bonus when it is your birthday because we heard so many anniversary songs tonight...

Superbowl chez Marc, Beatrice et le petit Nicolas !

Le "Super Bowl" est la finale du championnat de football américain qui voit s'affronter les vainqueurs des deux conférences pour le titre de champion de la NFL (National Football League).

Le Super Bowl est un événement majeur de la télévision américaine. Les études d’audience montrent que ce match enregistre des parts de marché considérables, situées entre 40 et 60%. On estime ainsi que 141 millions d’Américains (2006) suivent cette rencontre à la télévision.
Par ailleurs, beaucoup de chanteurs et musiciens connus s'y produisent lors des cérémonies d'ouverture et les mi-temps.
De plus, après Thanksgiving, ce dimanche de l'année marque la plus grosse consommation de nourriture dans tous les Etats-Unis!
Mais surtout, le Super Bowl est le programme télévisé le plus regardé de l'année aux US.
Cette année, le Super Bowl XLII se tenait au stade de l'Université de Phoenix en Arizona.
Contre toute attente, les Giants de New York ont vaincu les Patriots de New England par un score de 17–14. Le suspense était la jusqu'a la fin du match!

Avec des chiffres d’audience d’un tel niveau, le coût des annonces publicitaires atteint des sommets. Ainsi, une annonce de trente secondes pendant le Super Bowl XLI était facturée 2,7 millions de dollars. Plus de 200 pays regardent cette finale et c'est le deuxième évènement sportif le plus regardé après la finale de la coupe de monde de football.
Comme tous les ans, les publicitaires et grandes marques rivalisent d'ingéniosité pour avoir la plus drole ou la plus originale des publicités du Super Bowl.

Body Worlds 2 @The Tech Museum of San Jose

Since the time we heard about it, we were finally able to do this famous exposition : "Body World 2 & The Three Pound Gem".
This Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies was presented at the Tech Museum of San Jose from September 27, 2007 through January 26, 2008.

First, Clement joined us at the Sino restaurant on Santana Row for their delicious Dim Sum.
Then, we took the line (2 hours...) just to buy the tickets. It allowed us to enter the museum only 2 hours later. Waiting for our time, we did the IMAX Dome Theater with a movie about "Le Tour de France".

Gunther von Hagens is the inventor of the Plastination process. It allows to preserve individual tissues and organs that have been removed from the body of the deceased as well as the entire body itself. By removing water and fats from the tissue and replacing these with polymers, the Plastination process deprives putrefaction bacteria of what they need to survive. In reality, it is more complex than that but all the details are on his website.

This exposition Body World 2 & The Three Pound Gem was more dedicated to the brain.
Having a background in biology, I found it very interesting and amazing to see muscles, all the organs, foetus, bones... from so close. There were also those black lungs from smokers which definitively should disgust people from cigarette.

If you have the opportunity to see this exposition close to your place one day, go for it!

Northern California OAUG Training Day

Let's talk about work.
The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) is a global organization that enhances the capabilities of real Oracle users in their day-to-day use.
The 2008 Training Day for Northern California OAUG was held today at the Santa Clara Convention Center with 48 exhibitors.
Approximately 700 attendees assisted to the many presentations offered, and I was one of them!
Lucky me: my company had a booth at this conference and so I was able to spend the day there and also attend the following presentations:
- presentation held by Oracle on Release 12 of Subledger Accounting and Release 12 of Payments Engine,
- how to utilize Oracle's Automated Lockbox feature in Oracle Receivables,
- FSG (Financial Statement Generator) tips and tricks for creation and maintenance.
Those presentations and the others are also available for download in their seminar archive.

It was nice for a day to not be at my desk debugging issues or testing new set-ups.

To complete this already fully day, we headed up for San Francisco with Yann, Marthe and Jean to participate in this Klub Europe event in a Cigar Bar. We were all a little disappointed I must say... It looked more appealing from outside. Never mind.

- 12 jours en avril à Singapour, Kuala Lumpur et Penang - Malaisie et Phuket - Thailande,
- 2 semaines en France à la fin de l'été pour le Carnaval de Notting Hill à Londres, Paris pour le mariage du frère à Jean et Bretagne pour revoir ma famille,
- week-end en Octobre à Yosemite en Californie du nord,
- long week-end de Thanksgiving à San Diego en Californie du sud,
- long week-end de Noël à Las Vegas dans le Nevada.

Espérons en faire autant pour 2008 !

We completed our 4-days week-end at Las Vegas by the Christmas Buffet at 'Le Village' in Paris Las Vegas Hotel. The room is a two-thirds repliqua of our classic French village cliches. Buffet stations are grouped according to French regions. In Brittany, you have, of course, made-to-order crepes, except the waiter does not know what is a butter-sugar crepe... only heavy topping to put on it are availables... Other represented regions are Normandy, Alsace and Provence. Bread and cheese are better than other buffets but do not expect to find the real taste of France here. I finally think that we should have go to the Bellagio Buffet which is one of the priciest but also the highest ranked buffet. Next time.

Black Friday Sales / Bienvenida a Tijuana !

En ce lendemain de Thanksgiving, nous ne dérogeons pas à la règle : faire les soldes !
Direction “Las Americas Premium Outlets” et ses 125 magasins… Ce qui est marrant, c’est que ce centre est vraiment accolé avec la frontière Mexicaine. Le parking est dominé par ce grand mur qui empêche les candidats à l’immigration de traverser. Dans les magasins, les vendeurs/vendeuses vous parlent en mexicain, même si c’est évident que vous ne l’êtes pas…

Les affaires ont semble t’il été bonnes puisque tout le monde a au moins sorti une fois sa carte de credit, mis à part… moi… Ben non, je n’ai toujours pas trouvé ces petites bottines que je cherche depuis des semaines... Avec des -40% -50% voire -75%, les américains profitent en général de ce week-end pour faire tous leurs achats de Noël.

Puis, Pau Din, Sunil, Marthe, Jean et moi-même traversons la frontière à pied pour profiter de l’après-midi dans la ville de Tijuana. Mis à part des restaurants et boutiques pour les touristes, il n’y a rien de special à voir. Cette ville est surtout connue pour sa vie nocturne où les jeunes américains profitent d’une législation plus souple sur l’alcool pour y venir faire la fête.

In the United States, Thanksgiving is a four day weekend which usually marks a pause in school and college calendars. Many workers (78% in 2007) are given both Thanksgiving and the day after as paid holidays. I am one of those!
--> What do we eat?
Thanksgiving meals are traditionally family events where certain kinds of food are served.
First and foremost, turkey is the featured item in most Thanksgiving feasts (so much so that Thanksgiving is sometimes facetiously referred to as "Turkey Day").
Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, pecan or pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanks giving dinner. Yep, it is a HEA-VY meal... Usually, you spend the rest of the week-end recovering...
The Thanksgiving season is also a time of generosity. People contribute food to annual Thanksgiving food drives and donate to charities.

The early settlers of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts were particularly grateful to Squanto, the Native American and former British slave who taught them how to both catch eel and grow corn and also served as their native interpreter. Without Squanto's assistance, the settlers might not have survived in the New World.
The Plymouth settlers (who came to be called "Pilgrims") set apart a holiday immediately after their first harvest in 1621.

Halloween Party!

Tonight, we went to a huge Halloween Party (around 450 guests!) which was a fund raising at the same time.
Those guys really know how to make a sensational party!
There were live music bands performing all night long, inside the living room and along the swimming pool. We even had a children dancing performance and firedancers.

The decorations were fantastics and everybody played the game by wearing a costume. Pirates, nurses for a night, witches, vampires, firefighters, Obi-Wan, Popeye, Pharaon, bunnies, angels, demons, cow, policemen etc took assault of the place. We even saw a siren but the poor was having difficulties to walk and everybody was stepping on her tail...
For Americans, Halloween is an important event. They either rent or buy a costume in one of the many stores that propose everything from the wig to the entire costume and even panties and socks... For the occasion, I was in Princess of Thieves ("Robin of the Woods") and Jean was the pirate "Jack Sparrow". We had lot of fun. This is the kind of party you don't want to miss. Hopefully, they will do it again next year! See you there with your best outfit!
